Fierce Ink Press!

Fierce Ink Press Co-Op Ltd. is pleased to announce a partial list of authors for its digital imprint launching in September. Fierce Shorts are 5,000 to 15,000 word creative non-fiction pieces written by established and emerging authors who will draw from personal experiences from their adolescence.

Inspired by Dan Savage’s “It Gets Better” campaign for bullied LGBT youth, the goal of the imprint is to give voice to teen issues from the perspective of adults who have gone on to success. Twenty per cent of net proceeds will go toward a youth-related charity of each author’s choice.

The line-up of authors is wide-ranging and representative of each of the Atlantic provinces. Newfoundland writer Gerard Collins, whose short story collection Moonlight Sketches won the Ches Crosbie Barristers Fiction Award at the Atlantic Book Awards earlier this year, will be writing to support For the Love of Learning (http://www.ftlol.org/).

“Writing has given me a lot and Fierce Shorts offered me a way to give something back,” says Collins. “It’s not easy being a teenager. Sometimes a young person just needs to know that someone else gets it. I can’t think of a more important reason for me to write anything than to ease someone’s sense of being alone in the world.”

Other confirmed authors include:

Nova Scotia
Jo Treggiari: her debut YA novel Ashes, Ashes was nominated for the 2012 Ontario Library Association’s White Pine awards. Her charity of choice is HeartWood Centre for Community Youth Development (http://www.heartwood.ns.ca/).

Newfoundland
Chad Pelley: blogger at Salty Ink and author of acclaimed novel Away From Everywhere. His short will be supporting The Canadian Association of Suicide Prevention (CASP) (http://www.suicideprevention.ca/).

Jamie Fitzpatrick: author of You Could Believe in Nothing which won the Fresh Fish Award for Emerging Writers. His charity will be Choices for Youth (http://www.choicesforyouth.ca/).

New Brunswick
Corey Redekop: author of Shelf Monkey whose new novel, Husk, is coming out in October and has already received advanced praise. The charity he’ll be supporting is Street Kids International (http://www.streetkids.org).

Prince Edward Island
Patti Larsen: a popular and prolific YA author whose book Run won the 2012 PEI Book Award for best fiction. The Adventure Group (http://www.adventuregrouppei.ca/) is the charity that Patti has chosen.

Carol Little: her novella Hide Your Life Away was a finalist in 2009 Indie Book Awards and her poetry collection A Study in Love was nominated for a 2011 Golden Crown Literary Society Award. Carol has chosen to support AIDSPEI (specifically their teen drop-ins and programs geared towards 15-18 year olds) (http://www.aidspei.com/).

In addition to publishing digital shorts by established local authors, Fierce Ink Press has an open call for submissions from new and emerging writers. For details visit http://fierceinkpress.com/submissions/fierce-shorts/
