KABARETT

The Dalhousie Opera Workshop presents KABARETT from January 31-Feb 3 at the Sir James Dunn Theatre in Halifax. Director Mary Lou Martin makes her Dal Opera Workshop debut, as she guides us on a journey of social commentary from both sides of the Atlantic ranging from hilarity to tragedy. Selections from Weill’s American period and his influence on Bolcom, Britten, Sondheim and Bernstein are included in this Review showcase. Recently she spoke with AE about the show. AE: How did you get involved with this production? MLM: I was contacted by Marcia Swanston who is a voice teacher at the Dal Music Department and the producer of this show. I was recommended to her by Linda Moore. AE: What are the challenges of the piece? MLM: The Mahagonny Songspiel is a collectIon of poems by Brecht set to music by Weill. Opera Box!

For the second year in a row, the Capitol Theatre is holding a raffle to win an Opera Box for EVERY SHOW held at the Theatre during the 2013-2014 Season. The lucky winner will receive four Opera Box tickets for every performance presented at the Capitol Theatre between July 1 st , 2013 and June 30, 2014. Tickets for this contest are now on sale for $5 at the Capitol Theatre Box Office, located at 811 Main Street in Moncton. The winner must be of legal age, however d oes not need to be present at the time of the draw to win (Draw date: May 23, 2013). He or she is invited to contact the Box Office Manager one week prior to the desired performance to order tickets, which ARE transferable. The estimated value of the prize is: $15,000 (no cash value). CommUNITY and JazzEast present a night of words and music featuring team-poetry pros Dwayne Morgan and Tomy Bewick Spoken word artists Dwayne Morgan (Toronto) and Tomy Bewick (Burlington) headline two back-to-back presentations of the CommUNITY series on Saturday, February 2, 2013, at The Sonic Temple. Presented in partnership with JazzEast, February’s CommUNITY event will also feature new music from host Verena Rizg, and musicians Tim Crofts (keys) and Doug Cameron (percussion) in collaboration with poets on the open mic. Performances take place at 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Both shows will showcase Dwayne and Tomy as solo artists and also as a team-poetry powerhouse duo. stereophonic

The 10 th annual Stereophonic Festival begins today and runs until Saturday, January 19 in Sackville NB. Organized by and as a fundraiser for CHMA 106.9 FM , (the community radio station headquartered on Mount Allison’s campus) the festival is about promoting a diverse range of music without any commercial distractions. Rock icon, Brent Randall, has classified Stereophonic among the “best alternative music festivals” and this year’s varied line-up is sure to follow suit. (Note: This year’s schedule offers a mixture of all ages and 19 + shows.)
