Jill Barber - Mischievous Moon

Although Jill Barber’s retro-folk charm remains in her newest album, the musical composition of her songs seems to have matured. The album is a modern take on soulful fifties jazz with its sweeping symphonic melodies. Each song has the romantic, dream-like quality of a Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald tune, the perfect accompaniment for Barber’s soulful voice. The blend of genres and playful dynamics of this album lend it a universal quality, making Barber a uniquely rich small-town-Canadian artist. If her 2008 album Chances hasn’t broadened her audience, Mischievous Moon certainly will. - SO

Multi award-winning Canadian jazz singer-songwriter, pianist and radio host Laila Biali tours Atlantic Canada from May 12 to May 21. Recently we spoke with Biali about her past, present and future. What are your roots? In terms of my heritage, Dad comes from Egypt and Mom is from Germany. They met on a beach in Vancouver and raised me and my three older sisters there.  When and why did you start playing music? My Mom tells the story of how I climbed up onto the piano bench to plunk out the melody to Sesame Street by ear when I was just 3.5 years old. It was then that she decided to enroll me in piano lessons rather than gymnastics classes. (I was a bouncy, energetic child, so that was the next logical choice!) 2020 was supposed to be a busy year for Alan Doyle, with plans for both a book tour and a 5-leg international concert tour. Like all of us, COVID-19 forced him to reschedule his agenda. However, it did not stop him from working his arse off to bring people together with song and story. Recently we caught up with the singer/songwriter/author from his home studio in St. John’s, Newfoundland. How has 2020 been for you? When last we spoke, you were getting ready to go on tour. It was one of the most unique years of my life. We played a gig on March 8th in Vancouver, in the first of what was to be five legs of the Rough Side Out tour. We flew home the next day for 10 days off, with a plan to reconvene in Mississauga. Of course, none of that happened. I went from March 9th until just a couple of weeks ago without playing a gig - the longest span that I have gone since I was 11 years old.
